Most folks will get the gist of Dr. David Carlton…educated and witty…but that’s just the newspaper version of the man. The salt-and-pepper handle–bar mustache, Wrangler jeans and big buckle cannot mask his contagious grin and infectious laugh. He is a humorous author as well as a veterinarian.
‘Doc’ Carlton was raised on a ranch in West Texas, experiencing the daily life that involved handling livestock and plenty of work before his family moved to the city. But he never forgot his roots, cowboyin’.
Attending Texas A&M University, he acquired four college degrees. Then, his path was set.
“They sent us out of there with a diploma, a rope, some bailing wire, a bottle of penicillin, and said ‘go to work’”. So he did. He has worked on ranches larger than some states, treated feedlot cattle, then owned and operated five different clinics in North Texas, mixed practices...treating both large and small animals. However, most of his career was strictly equine medicine and surgery. “From dusty ol’ cowboy boots to silk suits,” he said, “I’ve seen and heard it all.
In 42 years of clinical practice, I’ve treated everything that bites, stings, or crawls. And, on some days that includes the clients.” Goldfish to Buffalos was the original title of his first book, but the series of animal vet short story books revolved around ‘DOC’ and his infamous logo. So, the titles were changed to: DALLAS DOC, TEXAS DOC, HEY DOC, COUNTRY DOC, and his newest tales DOC!
DALLAS DOC and TEXAS DOC are available in audio-books as well with DOC as the narrator!
